The National Flag of Ireland is also known as tricolor. It consists of green, orange and white. The flag proportion 1:2 meaning the length is twice the width.

The green represents Gaelic tradition, orange represents supporters of William of Orange and the white represents a lasting truce between the orange & the green.

The meaning of the Irish flag has so far been ironical, to say the least; though it has also been a symbol of optimism and idealism. It symbolizes the one thing Ireland has been very short of; peace. The Irish flag, that which was adopted by the Republic of Ireland consists of three vertical stripes of green, white and orange. The green is believed to represent the catholic majority of Ireland. On the other side the Orange is supposed to represent the Protestant minority, and the white stripe in between, represents peace between them. Another version of the flag, which is believed to be nationalistic, has a gold stripe in the centre. This is because the gold downplays or discounts the peace between the two sects.
