Lumbago is any pain in the lower back, the lumbar region of the body. It can be caused by a number of different 'triggers'. It could simply be a strained back muscle or ligament, a slipped disc or even a displaced vertebra. So the term itself can cover a variety of conditions and some people with lumbago may have a strained back muscle and experience some pain and discomfort, whilst another person may have a displaced vertebra and find that the back actually 'locks' and they are stuck in a bent position.
Lumbago can be caused by stooping, getting up awkwardly from a chair or lifting a heavy object.
Due to the range of conditions this term covers, treatment can vary from a few days rest on a very firm mattress to traction and physiotherapy over a relatively long period. People with mild lumbago are often given a set of exercises to enable them to strengthen the back and minimise further attacks.
