    The Republic of Latvia is a country in the Northern Europe. Latvia shares its borders with Estonia in the north, Lithuania in the south, Russia and Belarus towards the east and shares a nautical border with Sweden in the west.

    The ancestors of the Latvian people use to live on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea since the third millennium BC. Most parts of Latvia are covered by forest, and the state has a total of 12,000 small rivers and 3,000 lakes. The country mainly has fertile land; there are low-lying plains with hills found near the east, the uppermost point is Gaizinkalns situated at 312 m.

    The economy of Latvia has been growing on regular basis since the year 2000; it has recorded the highest GDP growth rates in Europe. In the year 2004 the yearly GDP was around 8.5%.
