A number of schools in North America, such as the majority in New York City, have decided to ban cell phones from their campuses during the past several years, due to the disruptive nature of this increasingly popular electronic device. The ban is even supported by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, despite protests on the part of some parents and many students. Some people who have made the case for cell phones have argued that it is essential in order to ensure that parents can contact their children and proved key, for example, on September 11, 2001. Despite metal detectors in many public schools and pat-down searches by security guards, some students do still find a way to bring their cell phones into schools.
The majority of teachers would agree that cell phones can be highly disruptive in classrooms. With an increasing number of games, music, texting services, cameras, internet access and other forms of entertainment available on cell phones, students do not only use it to stay in touch with their parents. Additionally, cell phones increase the risk of students cheating on their class exams. As well, one might also argue that it is far better for students to spend their breaks communicating directly with their peers (and thus developing their inter-personal skills) than chatting or playing with their phones.

Cell phone bans are nothing compared to metal detectors. Why do schools need metal detectors? Are they institutions of learning, or prisons? Why don't schools respect students' rights as citizens instead of treating them like criminals?
As for the phones, I support anyone's right to have a phone who wants one. It's not matter of needing to have one; it's a matter of a person has the right to have and use one if they want to. That is how a free country operates.

I think one of the most detrimental effects of using cell phones at a young age are the health related issues. Constant use of cell phones not only impairs your ability to hear but also it damages your brain cells which at a young age might not serve the cause because our young friends may find themselves lacking in confidence if something happens to their hearing or thinking capabilities at this young age. Secondly using them at school diverts a child's attention to something which produces only short term pleasure and can be harmful for the child's over all growth and career choices in the future. Engaging a young kid into something which changes so rapidly can really put him or her into the race of getting the latest technology cell phones which again will divert their attentions to more unproductive aspects of their lives but also can put pressure on their parents to meet their demands.
Of course security is an issue but carefully choosing a school for the kid where at least basic facilities are present may reduce this fear. Parents can feel themselves secure about the safety of their kids if they choose their schools with care. So, overall, considering the fact that kids have a long life ahead to live and contribute to society, this facility may not be allowed them at least at school levels

Yes, ban the cellphone. For secondary level students there is no need to use cellphones. Due to cellphones there's lots of disturbance in class. Using cellphones for more time is dangerous for minds.
