How Many Races Have The Horses Won Kentucky Derby ?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

An annual Grade I stakes race, The Kentucky Derby is held in Louisville in Kentucky. It was on May 17, 1875 that 15 three-year-old horses raced in the first Derby. It was won by a colt called Aristides, under the guidance of jockey Oliver Lewis, trained by Ansel Williamson, future Hall of Famer. The crowd that year was estimated to be about a thousand people. There have thus been 131 races so far.

The last horse to win the derby was named Barbaro. He competed in the 2006 derby with jokey Edgar Prado. He was trained by Michael Matz and owned by Lael Stables. Sadly, Barbaro had to be euthanized in the month of January, 2007.

The record holder for the fastest time that was ever run in the Derby (as per its present distance) stands at 1 minute 59 2/5 seconds. It was won by Secretariat in the year 1973.
