Mount Unzen is located on Kyūshū, a Japanese island. It is situated close to the city of Shimbara, Nagasaki Prefecture. This is a volcanic complex that consists of various peaks that overlap. It rises up to about 4,921 feet or 1,500 meters and its last recorded eruption took place in 1996. This volcano has been responsible for one of Japan's worst ever disasters when in the year 1792, one of its lava domes collapsed causing a tsunami that took the life of about 15000 people. Another such incident occurred in 1991 when an eruption killed close to 50 people. Presently, the highest peaks here are the Fugen-dake at an elevation of 1359 meters and the Heisei-Shinzan; with a height of 1486 meters.
