Who Was The First Black Civil War Veteran To Receive The Congressional Metal Of Honor?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest Military award in the United States, bestowed upon military personnels only. There hadn't been any black recipients of the award until 1997, when President Bill Clinton decided to award this medal to seven Black war veterans. Out of which only Vernon Baker was still alive. Thus Vernon Baker is the first black war veteran to receive this medal.

William Harvey Carney was awarded the Moh in 1900, almost 40 years after his service at Battery Wagner with the 54 Mass regiment. I am pretty sure he was not the 1st either.
