Budapest has two international airports, namely Ferihegy 1 and Ferihegy 2, located about 5km from each other. Most discount, or low-cost airlines fly to Ferihegy 1, including EasyJet, SkyEurope, Wizzair and several smaller carriers. Ferihegy Airport's terminal 2A, on the other hand, is used by full-service, national airlines, with the exception of Malev-Hungarian Airlines, which arrives to, and departs from terminal 2B, located right next to terminal 2A.

Ferihegy 2 is also the point of arrival and departure for all non-European flights to and from Budapest, including scheduled long-haul service to New York City, Toronto, Bangkok and Beijing.

Ferihegy 1, opened in 1950, is the older of the two airports, but in 2005 it underwent massive renovations in order to better serve the increasing discount, no-frills market. Ferihegy 2 dates back to 1985 and was expanded in 1997. Of the two airports, most passengers have observed that Ferihegy 2 is significantly more crowded than Ferihegy 1, due to a higher number of airplane movements. Ferihegy 1 and 2 handle over 8 million passengers each year.

Ferihegy 1 is situated 16km southeast of downtown Budapest, while Ferihegy 2 is approximately 20km from the city centre.
