There are at least three towns in America where the white squirrel has received official protection; Olney in Illinois, Marionville in southwest Missouri and Brevard in North Carolina. At first, white squirrels were considered lucky as they were very rare. These squirrels are white because they are actually albinos and they have been protected for many years. This has caused the otherwise recessive albino trait to become dominant. Quite a few towns are now trying to get them accepted as a separate individual species.

While the Brevard City Council made it unlawful to kill all squirrels (including the White Squirrel), Olney and Marionville Specifically Protect just the White Squirrel. There are a few towns (including Exeter in Ontario and Kenton in Tennessee) that claim to be the true "home of the white squirrel. However, the real "war" is between the two main contenders Olney and Marionville.

Olney, Illinois claims that they possess the "true" white squirrels as the squirrels in Marionville have dark eyes (therefore not really albino). Marionville, on the other hand claims that it has the largest and oldest white squirrel colony in the world. White squirrels have been in Marionville since at least 1854 and today there are approximately 600 white squirrels. In Marionville, according to an ordinance, killing a white squirrel will earn you a $1,000 fine.
