The Western Isles are the chain of islands at the top left hand corner of the map in the weather forecast. You can't miss them, Stornoway, the islands capital, is one of the locations used on all UK weather maps on TV.
There are two main modes of transport to the Western Isles, by sea and by air.
Taking the sea routes first, there are three main ferry crossings operated by Caledonian MacBrayne from Ullapool, Uig in Skye and from Oban.
The Ullapool crossing goes to Stornoway and takes around two and a half hours.
From Skye, there operates a triangular route, Uig/Lochmaddy, North Uist/Tarbert, Harris.
Air travellers can fly Glasgow/Stornoway on 48 seater aircraft, or on a smaller plane fly Glasgow/Barra landing at the famous beach airstrip, tides and seagulls permitting. There are also flights from Glasgow to Benbecula, Inverness to Stornoway and inter island flights. Be warned, flights are expensive compared to the likes of EasyJet.
