In The Film "Lord Of The Rings "how Did Gandalf The Grey Change Into Gandalf The White?

In the first part of the trilogy "The Fellowship of the Ring", Gandalf fell into an abyss while battling a monster (the Balrog) and the others thought he was dead. Later (in "The Two Towers") he turns up again, dressed in white. He explains that when he fell down the abyss, he pursued the Balrog unto the depths of the earth, and finally up the "endless stair", where Gandalf threw his enemy down from a tower.

He then wandered for a while - the implication is that he has really died - until rescued by Gwaihir, the giant eagle who had helped him before. Gwaihir carried him to the land of Lothlorien, where the Lady Galadriel and other Elves healed him and he was given white clothing.
