Julius Caesar (100 BC-44 BC) the architect of the Roman Empire and one of the most legendary figures in World History was Rome's leader from about October 49 BC till his death when he was assassinated on March 15 in 44 BC by conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus.

He ruled Rome as Dictator a political office that carried sweeping administrative, judicial as well as military powers with it, for a period of about 5 years in all. He though officially refused to be crowned as the King of the Roman Empire and preferred to rule in the name of the Senate and the Roman Republic.

Before assuming full powers Caesar had served as First Consul of the Roman Republic in 60 BC though in reality power was shared between himself and his allies Marcus Linius Crassus and Gneius Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great) the alliance being called as the First Triumvirate by later day historians.
