    Turin is a city of Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It is situated on the river Po. The city was founded by Taurini and the city is named by the founder's name. In 218 B.C it was partly destroyed by the Hannibal. Under emperor Augustus Turin was a Roman colony as well. In the 6th century it became a part of Lombard duchy. Under Charlemagne (742-814) Turin was a seat of the government and it was passed to the house of Savoy in the year of 1046. Later it became the capital of the Sardinia kingdom in the year of 1720.

    Turin was under the rules of France during the Napoleonic Wars. As the political and cultural center of the Risorgimento it acted as the first capital of united Italy (1861-1865). In the time of Second World War the city was damaged from alien air raids, but rebuilt later. The automotive industry and the international fashion were the part of the history of Turin.

    According to the census report of 2001, the population of the city Turin was 857,433.
