Why Did The Battle Of Camden Start?

The Battle of Camden started on August 16th, 1780 in South Carolina. This was a battle between British and American revolutionary forces and was part of the American Revolutionary War, where thirteen British colonies sought independence from Great Britain. The Battle of Camden was eventually won by a British army of some 2000 troops fighting against a somewhat larger American force.

The British forces were led by Major General Clinton who successfully captured Charlestown. Clinton also dispatched Major General Cornwallis and Colonel Banastre Tarleton  to help gain control over the rest of the state.

The American revolutionary forces in South Carolina were led by  Colonel Burford, who was defeated by Tarleton at Camden.
