Who Was Pocahontas?

    Pocahontas was Native American who basically achieved fame as a celebrity only at the end of her life in London. She married an Englishman named John Rolfe. Her name in reality was Matoaka and Amonute, Pocahontas was a name given to her in childhood days. Her stories were basically romantic myth making like Disney movie Pocahontas and the 2005 Terrence Malick film The New World. However according to William Strachey, pocahontas in the Powhatan language it means "little wanton".

    Some of the towns named after her are Pocahontas (Virginia), The village of Indian Queens in Cornwall, The Pocahontas Parkway, Powhatan County (Virginia), Matoaka (West Virginia), Pocahontas (Iowa), Pocahontas (Arkansas), Pocahontas (Illinois), to name a few.
