Podgorica is the largest city in Montenegro and is also its capital. It is also the commercial and cultural capital of the tiny country of Montenegro, which has recently separated from Serbia after a peaceful referendum. In Slavic tongues the name implies "under the little mountain". It has a population of a little under 140,000 and covers nearly 11% of Montenegro's land area besides housing 27% of its population.

The city was devastated during the Second World War and had seen considerable economic decline during the years that ensued the splitting up of the former Yugoslavia. It was, during 1945 to about 1992, officially called Titograd for the famous nationalist dictator Marshal Tito. Podgorica is also seeing an economic revival as Montenegro is becoming a center of tourism because of its unique culture, history and picturesque beauty.
