What Position Did Former Arsenal Footballer Nigel Winterburn Play For The Club?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Born in Warwickshire in nineteen sixty three, Nigel Winterburn was part of the infamous Arsenal back four, that under the then Arsenal manager Gerige Graham, won two league titles in the late eighties.

WInterburn was the left back of the quartet with Tony Adams and Steve Bould the centre backs and Lee Dixon the right back.  After the arrival in the mid nighties of Arsene Wenger to the Gunners, many thought the defensive unit built by Graham would be dismantled, particularly as the four were all either approaching or over thirty.

After overhauling the lifestyle choices of the four, Wenger lengthened the career of all four by some considerable distance.  Some slight changes were introduced, with former England centre half Martin Keown slowly replacing Steve Bould.

After signing for the North London club in nineteen eighty seven, Winterburn went on to make over four hundred league appearances for the Gunners, scoring eight goals.
