How Do You Find A Reputable Breeder?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Start by looking on the AKC website and also contact your local AKC chapter.  Then it is VITAL that you look at the health clearances of the puppies.  For example, we are breeders of English Cream Golden Retrievers (www.nicholberrygoldens.blogspot.com) and for the golden retriever, one of the biggest dangers is the development of hip dysplasia.  As a result, the most important health clearance for a prospective purchaser to research is the rating of the parents' hips.  The higher the rating, the less likely the dog is to develop hip dysplasia.  You need to research the health concerns of the breed you are considering and then be certain that you see the actual paperwork on the parents (a reputable breeder will not be offended by this inquiry).  If you are able to go see the puppy, NEVER buy a dog from a breeder who keeps its puppies in dirty conditions and never buy a dog who exhibits a lack of cleanliness/health e.g. Runny eyes, nose, etc.  Lastly, the breeder should offer a health guarantee for the first 72 hours, allowing you to take the puppy to your vet for an examination.  Good luck to you!
