If you go to the SPCA they offer animals to be adopted. If you don't have any luck you can go to any pet shop and let them know what you are looking for and they will try to help you find that special animal. Also your local vets take care of animals they are expecting and may send you to the family where you may have first choice of the special animal. Not all people are asking money for their dogs. Their dog becomes pregnant and they cannot afford to keep the pups and need to get rid of them. Just some thoughts.

Almost every breed imaginable has a breed-specific rescue organization. If you Google the breed you are interested in + the word RESCUE, you will find a site which is a clearing house for these organizations. I've adopted Chihuahuas and a Yorkie from such organizations and what wonderful pets! Of course you'll get a spayed or neutered pet - so there aren't more unwanted pets in the world, but you'll be doing a wonderful service to a lonely pet of the breed you seek if you rescue.

      Good luck!
