    Hertfordshire is an inland county in England. It is pronounced Hartfordshire, and older inhabitants of the county drop the't' in the pronunciation of the county's name and pronounce it is Har'fordshire. It is located to the north of Greater London. It is one of the Home Counties. It is often abbreviated to Herts. It is located in the East of England region. Hertfordshire covers a total area of 634 square miles. It is ranked 36th in the country in terms of area. The administrative headquarters of Hertfordshire is located at Hertford.

    Hertfordshire has a population of 1, 048, 200, it is ranked 15th in the country in terms of population. About 93.7 per cent of the county's population is made up of whites, three per cent of the population is of south Asia ethnicity and 1.1 per cent of the people of Hertfordshire are of Afro-Caribbean origin. Hertfordshire is located to the west of Essex, to the east of Buckinghamshire and to the south of Bedfordshire, Luton and Cambridgeshire.
