Richard Halliburton was a travel writer-adventurer who wrote six books during the 1920s and 30s.
Born in 1900, Halliburton became enamoured with travelling while studying at Princeton. His first book: "The Royal Road to Romance" (1926) was a compilation of articles he wrote on his return from a round-the-world trip he took, taking in Europe, Egypt, India and South-East Asia.
His second book entitled "The Glorious Adventure" (1927) was based ona his voyage in which he retraced the steps of Ulysses as told by Homer.
He turned his attention to South America for his third book and wrote about his adventures as he followed the route of the "conquistador" Cortez. The title of this book was "New Worlds to Conquer" (1930).
His next book, "The Flying Carpet" (1932), told the story of his flight around the world in a tiny aeroplane of the same name.
"Seven League Boots" was his next offering, describing his journey across Europe to Siberia, including a trip across the Alps on an elephant and an interview with the executioner of of the Russian royal family.
His last book was a two volume work aimed at children entitled "Richard Halliburton's Book of Marvels" and was very successful.He died while undertaking another trip, this time on board a Chinese junk which sank while he tried to sail from Hong Kong to San Francisco in 1939.
