Who Did Robespierre Try To Crush During The Reign Of Terror?

In the French Revolution, Robespierre was the leader of the Jacobins (a republican group founded in 1789.) He was instrumental in the execution of King Louis XVI and his family. The group that he is often remembered for attacking and overthrowing is the Girondins. These were a right-wing royalist party; their name derives from the Girond departement (district) where many of their leaders came from. They were overthrown by the Jacobins in 1793, and many were killed.

In 1794 Robespierre himself was overthrown and executed by his own former companions. Some historians now believe that Robespierre's role in carrying out the Reign of Terror was less great than is often supposed.
