Is Hydroponics Organic?

There is a huge popular debate about the value of "organic" fertilizers and methods. Many people would like to apply "organics" to hydroponics. Currently accepted organic fertilizer components are dependent upon organisms in the soil to convert the "organic" materials into a usable form for plants.

I think the problem with this debate is that individuals are looking at hydroponics from soil perspective. Inorganic products have had a devastating effect in the environment. Free fertilizer run-off has created plant imbalances, destroyed essential bacteria in the soil and contributed to over-all pollution. In hydroponics this cannot happen because it is normally a closed environment. There is no run-off, the plant food remains in the system until it is used by the plants.
