How Many Series Of Red Dwarf Are There?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In total, there are eight series of science fiction sitcom Red Dwarf, which ran from 1988 to 1999. The series was created by Grant Naylor, a collective pseudonym for writing duo Rob Grant and Doug Naylor.

There have been varied opinions between fans of the show, due to the many changes that were made to the series' cast, setting, creative teams and production values.

The seventh series was seen as a major disappointment among fans. Although it had a much slicker appearance and higher- budget, long-standing fans did not appreciate the shift from outright sitcom into something approaching comedy drama. The shift back to traditional sitcom for series VIII was greeted with similarly lukewarm response and at times even hostile. One issue in particular was the decision to ressurect the entire crew of Red Dwarf, who in the very first series, had died due to a radiation leak, leaving character David Lister as the last human being alive, which was the main feature of the show. Fans felt that having the entire crew back would detract from the series' central premise of Lister being the last human alive.

In 1993, an episode from the sixth series 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' won an International Emmy in the Popular Arts category, and the show also won Best BBC Comedy Series at the British Comedy Awards in 1994.
