For split nails in your dog, trim the nail to maximum but avoid the pink area where blood supply is present. He will be all right after few days. If the nails are torn or loose then take your dog to vet because he can develop infection.
To avoid split nails in future, trim nails regularly. Long nails can cause many problems. Purchase a trimmer from pet store and trim the nail up to just before pink area.
