The major function of a Nuclear bomb that makes it so deadly is that unstable atoms are split apart causing major radioactive explosions. The energy released is so widespread and powerful that it destroys anything the least bit combustible, and also leaves deadly radioactivity in its wake. Which will eventually kill any living thing that is within the danger zone, even weeks, months, years after the initial explosion.
