The Brighton Railway Station was built in 1840. The company that is responsible for the entire running and maintenance of the Brighton Railway Station is the London and Brighton Railway.

The Brighton main line service connects to Bedford, Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport, Portsmouth and several main line stations in London, including London Victoria are quick and frequency, although when some work is in progress at the station, some services use less direct routes to reach the same destinations.

Twice a day, there are services to other big cities in the United Kingdom, including Manchester (Lancashire) and Birmingham (Warwickshire). There is a service that goes to Wales via Bristol (Gloucestershire). The fastest service from London's Victoria Station to Brighton now takes 51 minutes to cover the distance. It was comparatively slower in the past and the ride to the British capital from Brighton took upto two hours in 1841, 80 minutes in 1859 and an hour in 1910.

In the early days, the service to Manchester used to travel under the aegis of Virgin Trains route number VT3 to Glasgow in Scotland, and then proceed as the Sussex Scot to Dundee in Scotland under the British Rail. This service has been cancelled and reintroduced several times in the past, but is now defunct.
