Why do they cal sound waves, sound waves, if they go straight?

Sound doesn't travel in a straight line. Maybe you're thinking of light which travels ins traight lines. Sound travels in waves with peaks and troughs. Think of it as a chain of rolling hills. The hilltops are the peaks of the waves, and the valleys between the hills are the troughs.
