Keep up his fluid intake. This is the most important thing. Make sure he drinks lots and lots, preferably water, some diluted juice and possibly milk.

If your child is at all lethargic with his bug then please seek medical advice urgently. What follows are only good guidelines for children who are basically bright and happy in themselves, just also have a bottom problem.

A tummy bug (microbe) is probably causing the diarrhoea. So what he eats is unlikely to make much difference; you just have to wait it out. The main thing is to keep up his strength, lots of fluids and foods. Normally diarrhoea is self-limiting.

A few foods can cause diarrhoea, if taken in excess. Anything high in fibre, especially fruit juice and dried fruits top the list. A rough rule of thumb is no more than 2 of the child's own handfuls of dried fruit per day, and no more than 4 oz of pure fruit juice daily , which should be given very diluted with water, at a ratio of about 1 part fruit juice to 6 parts water.

Because high bran foods tend to loosen the bowels, while his bowels are unsettled try to lean towards more stodgy foods like bread, potatoes, meat, etc.

Some children are sensitive to specific things -- just like some adults always get the runs if they have curry, onions, garlic, etc.
