County Leitrim is in the Republic of Ireland. It has a very short Atlantic coast. Its neighbours are Ulster and Donegal to the north and Fermanagh to the northeast. Cavan is to the east and Longford is to the south. Leitrim is derived from Irish and means “grey ridge”.

Leitrim is dividing into South and North Leitrim by the River Shannon and Lough Allen. County Leitrim has the lowest population in the country and is also the smallest in Connacht area. The second highest rate for suicides in any county is also reported to be from Leitrim. The population of the elderly is also above average, with about 7.6 per cent over the age of 75.

William Butler Yeats spent some time in Leitrim, fascinated with Lough Allen and Sligo-march.
