In the one crash, it was due to the engineer texting with someone. But other than that, you know things happen in 3's right? Trains, planes, stars dying...

That most recent one was just a stop away from where I live. There were people at the train station here all night waiting to hear about there loved ones. It was really awful. The engineer apparently missed/went through 3 warning lights. And yes, he was apparently text messaging.

It's amazing something as simple as not seeing a light would lead to such a catastrophe.  They should have more devices monitoring the operation of the trains than just a single human being.  You're right, it's antiquated technology and so many lives are at stake.  One error of judgment should not have such dire consequences.

The local news here has been showing how the engineer who was tenting was involved with kids who were fascinated with trains and was kind of mentoring them. Metrolink first said there was no way anyone would be texting while working and then one of these kids showed texts from the engineer just minutes before the crash. You would think that it would all be so much more automated.

It's weird isn't it a train in the neighboring town jumped the tracks about a month ago...There wasn't any mess just a bunch of turned over empty cars.
