The Kolbe reaction is better known as Kolbe-Schmitt reaction/Kolbe process. It is basically a carboxylation chemical reaction that benefits by heating sodium phenolate with carbon dioxide under force and then treating the result with sulphuric acid. The end result is a scented hydroxyl acid also known as salicylic acid.
The Kolbe-Schmitt result proceeds through the nucleophilic calculation of a phenolate to carbon dioxide to provide salicylate. The final procedure is the reaction of the salicylate with acid to obtain preferred salicylic acid.
Adolph Wilhelm Hermann Kolbe was a chemist born in Germany. After studying chemistry with Friedrich Wohler he joined as assistance to Robert Wilhelm Bunsen at the University of Marburg in the year 1842.
He spent most of his time researching electrolysis of salts of fatty and other acids and derived salicylic acid.
