What Is The Largest Single-span Suspension Bridge In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Humber Bridge, near Kingston-upon-Hull, is not only the longest in the UK, it is also the fourth largest in the world. Spanning a total length of 2,220 metres across the Humber Estuary between Hessle, East Yorkshire, and Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, the Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world for 17 years.

It was offcially opened by the Queen on 17 July 1981 and has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. The bridge is regarded as the gateway to Yorkshire by locals and can be crossed by motor vehicles (toll cost of £2.70), pedestrians and cyclists, for whom it is free to cross. Unfortunately, it is also farily popular for people committing suicide. Before it was built, it would take an extra 50 miles to get to Grimsby from Hull by road. The only way to travel across the bridge was by ferry from Hull to New Holland.
