    Gold leaf is nothing but gold beaten into very thin sheets or layers. These gold leaves were used for gilding and for manuscript letters and illustrations. It is also used for decorating books and titling. Thus it is an object used for embellishments. It is often machine made out of 22 carats gold. It is used in picture frames and water gilding.

    Gold leafs are also used for cooking purposes. Once they are branded as non-toxic it is used for decorative purposes in foodstuffs and drinks. The foil often found in mithais and different types of chocolates is an example of gold leaf. Fruit jelly snacks and coffee also at times contain gold leafs in small quantities. Nowadays it is also used as an ingredient in liquors.
