The River Nile at 4160 miles (6700 km) long is the longest river in the world.

Flowing through nine countries during its meandering from source, the River Nile drains into a delta or drainage basin that covers three million square kilometres.

In reality, the River Nile is not one river but three; the two main branches being the White Nile and the Blue Nile, which merge at Khartoum to form the River Nile proper.

The Nile's discharge is estimated to be 17,000 cubic metres per second, impressive enough but a  fraction of the output of the River Amazon.

Some of the source waters of the Nile are 1800 metres above sea level. From the opposite end, at the delta that drains into the Mediterranean, the Nile is navigable as far south as Aswan, which is some 960 miles away. Aswan was the site of the first cataract or waterfall that travellers met when sailing upstream.
