When Was Chesterfield Football Club Founded?

    Chesterfield Football Club was founded in 1867 and is therefore the fourth oldest club in the Football League. They were originally part of Chesterfield Cricket Club.

    The club was accepted into the Football League's Second Division in 1899, although it later rejoined the Midland League and has spent most of it's history playing in the lower leagues.

    The best league position, Chesterfield have ever achieved is 4th in Division 2 in 1946/47. However in 1996/97, they reached the semi-finals of the FA cup and in the 2006/07 season, they stunned spectators by beating Manchester City in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup. They eventually got knocked out of the competition on penalties to Charlton after drawing with them 3-3.

    Chesterfield Football Club play their home games at the Recreation Ground, which is better known as Saltergate and has a capacity of approximately 8,500 people.

    The club currently reside in the League One division and came in 16th place in the 2005/06 season.
