Writing a check is fairly easy to do but it is important to write it correctly as the check can become invalid if not done correctly and will therefore not be paid to the recipient.

Firstly, make sure you enter the correct date into the date column in the top right hand corner of the check.  Secondly in the ‘pay’ column, enter the name of the person or company that you wish to pay the $250 to.  Thirdly in the box alongside the ‘pay’ line (below the date) enter the amount in numbers that you would like to pay, in this case $250.00, being sure to add the amount in dollars and cents.

Next where it states ‘to the order of’, or underneath the pay line, you will need to write the amount of the payment in words as such, ‘two hundred and fifty dollars only’.  Finally make sure that the check is signed in the signature column, as without this the check will be invalid.

The check, or your checkbook, may have a ‘memo’ section for you to write in.  This can be used to write a reminder of why you are paying the check, perhaps an account number or a reason for the payment, such as ‘birthday’ or ‘fine’.

If you would like a more detailed explanation of how to write the check then www.immihelp.com has a step by step check writing diagram that will show you a sample check, along with instructions of what to write in each box.  It is important to remember that this is only an example and the check you are writing may differ in terms of layout or columns.

If you are still unsure on check writing then your local bank will be able to help you.
