What Are The Advantages Of Using The Metric System?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Fractions are almost eliminated in the metric system. Since every metric unit is a decimal value of those above and below it, most changes between units require only the moving of a decimal point. For example, to convert kilometers to meters just move the decimal point three places to the right, which automatically multiplies it by 1,000: 3.74 kilometers = 3,740 meters.

By contrast, to find the number of yards in 3.74 miles requires first knowing that there are 1,760 yards in a mile, and then multiplying that figure to arrive at 6,582.4 yards—no small job if you don't have a calculator handy. A U.S. Department of Commerce publication notes that "one authority is convinced that the U.S. aerospace industry alone would save about $65 million a year in engineers' time by converting entirely to metric."

At the supermarket, thrifty shoppers who compare prices will find that they need not convert pounds to ounces (16) or quarts to ounces (32) before dividing into the price to determine price per ounce. The metric weight or volume can be divided directly into the price in each case.

I agree wholly with the answer above. Also, we are the only county that uses the inch and yard stuff.
I'll tell you a true story. One of my daughters had made a MAJOR adjustment
ent to the steerage system on nuclear submarines a while ago.
IT WAS ALL DONE MATHEMATICALLY (MASTLY CALCULUS) AND IT WORKED on paper
sHE CALLED DOWN TO HAVE A PROTOTYPE MADE TO HER SPECS WHICH SHE WAS BRINGING TO NEWPORT NEWS-THJ
E SUB BASE. WHEN THE PROTOTYPE CAME UP, SHE REALIZED TO HER HORROR THAT SHE HAD USED INCHES INSTEAD OF CENTIMETERS. sWEATING BULLETS AT THE THOUGHt
T OF MAKING A DAMN FOOL OF HER SELF SHE WORKED IT OVER AND GOT IT RIGHT.
i WAS A CHEMISTRY MAJOR AND USED METRICS ALL THE TIME BUT i HAVE TO CONFESS THAT I COULD NEVER VISUALIZE METRICS LIKE A CAN INCHES AND YARDS

All the scientist around the world can use the Metric system. So it makes it easier for them to communicate.

Most countries can use this system with little or no confusion as metric units are decimals and basically eliminates the need for fractions.....the best to you
