Well, if you had a lease together, then he is legally obliged to contribute his part of the rent as stipulated in the lease. Your best course of action is to contact the letting agent or landlord, and advise them that while you will continue to pay your part of the rent, you will not be held responsible for your ex-room-mate's part.
