I think the second part of your question "how did he feel" can only be answered by William Webb Ellis. No body can actually answer this but he and his team mates might have found it very interesting and fun thing to tackle and get the ball. He never started running with the ball towards the goal line to invent a new game. But i'm sure after playing the game he actually thought about it.
