Are Mercury Amalgam Fillings Safe?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Mercury amalgam is a mix of many metals, including (typically) silver, copper, tin... and a big dose of mercury.  Mercury amalgam has used as a tooth filling after cavities are drilled out for over 70 years.  As such, it seems to have an impressive safety record.

The problem is that it's MERCURY that we're talking about here.  This heavy metal is known to be toxic to the nervous system of human beings.  How can we be so foolish as to put it on our teeth?  But then it's argued that the chemical way in which the mercury amalgam is bound up together makes it impossible for the stuff to get into people's bodies; in theory, even if a filling breaks and you swallow it, it should just pass thru undigested..

This hasn't stopped a lot of people from claiming that their dental fillings caused a multitude of health problems, including multiple schlerosis, anxiety, depression and worse.  Studies on dental workers, who are exposed to the most of this stuff, are failing to really back up these claims (allowing for some extra risk because of their occupational exposure).
