Answer Question

It is generally believed and held the in Elizabethan times almost all of England had a perception of Jews as being of a particular type. They were also expelled later from England and returned later at the time of Oliver Cromwell. At times they were required to wear a certain type of dress or apparel to identify them in public.

Shakespeare's play is also believed to be influenced by these factors. The villain in the plot is a Jewish money lender. Jews were known to be jewellers, money lenders and bankers in those days. His beliefs that exclude Jesus were devoid of mercy. The character of Shylock on stage dresses in a particular oriental way as well. In the end of the play it is seen how to protect Antonio, Shylock is tricked in the law courts. He only receives redemption at the end when he finally converts to Christianity.
