Can be.. May be.. The cat must be clean.. And kid friendly.. And of course the kids must not be allergic to cats..

It could work both ways, unless you show kids how to respect a cat. Dogs are really better adapted to kids, but again you still have to teach kids to respect any pet. The pet is not only there for the kids sake, because the pet has needs of it's own.
