When Did Coronation Street First Air?

Coronation Street is Britain's longest-running soap opera. It first appeared on British screens on December 9th 1960 and was created by Tony Warren.
Coronation Street, or 'Corrie' to fans, is set in the fictional location of Weatherfield, Greater Manchester. It follows the lives of the residents of the local area and centres around the pub - 'The Rovers Return'.
The original title of the show was 'Florizel Street' but this was deemed to sound like a disinfectant.

Popular characters from the early years that still remain in many viewers memories include the battleaxe Ena Sharples, the landlady Annie Walker, cleaning lady Hilda Ogden and the 'tart with a heart' Elsie Tanner.

Bet Gilroy played by Julie Goodyear was one of the most famous characters from the show and was there from 1966 to 1995.

However the longest-serving actors still on the soap are Emily Bishop (nee Nugent) played by Eileen Derbyshire who has been around since 1961and of course Ken Barlow, who is the only surviving character from the first episode. He is played by William (Bill) Roache.
