Avalanche is generally defined as a large slide of snow or rock which occurs down a mountainside. It usually occurs when an upsurge of snow is released down a slope. It is said that an avalanche can reach a speed of over 300 kilometres per hour.
The force of the falling material and the winds formed is at such a high scale that it can destroy anything in its path. According to experts, there are approximately one million avalanches in a year. A snow avalanche is formed when snow builds up on top of another heavy layer of snow which eventually starts to slide down the mountainside.
The effects of an avalanche can be abridged by construction snow sheds and also by creating barriers made up of rocks, soil and other various substances.
