You treat your dog until the worms are gone and so are any eggs it may have in its intestines.
The treatment depends on the type of worm your dog has:
roundworm-visible to the eye - worms can grow to be 7 inches long with females capable of producing up to 200,000 eggs in one day, which because of the hard casing, can exist in soil for years. Dogs who eat the soil, ingest the eggs into their intestine where they hatch and the bloodstream carries the larva into the lungs. You can find meds to rid your dog of roundworm, but if not used properly can make your dog sick. See a vet.
hookworm-thin, small worm that sticks to the small intestinal wall to suck blood. Can be contracted three ways - 1. Thru the mother dog during pregnancy, and 2. Nursing 3. Thru ingesting contaminated soil. A severe hookworm infestation can kill young pups, but not usually fatal in adult dogs. Diarrhea, anemia, weight loss, and getting progressively weak are signs of hookworm infestation. A vet can only diagnose by looking at feces under microscope, then he can provide a medication to rid your pet of the hookworm.
Do it yourself - Anthelmintic is taken once every week for 3 weeks.
tapeworm-small intestinal parasite transmitted to dogs by fleas (the dog swallows the eggs or eats something that is itself infested with the tapeworm or fleas.) Tapeworms are segmented and pieces of it come out thru the anus. The dried, crusty white, then yellow pieces of segments look like rice. They stick to the fur around the anus, are found in a dogs bed and where ever he walks when they drop off. See a vet for proper meds to erradicate this worm.
whipworm-a threadlike worm, it has one large end, the head and live in the cecum which is the first section of a dog's large intestine. It is hard to find proof of the whipworm and your vet will have to diagnose it to prescribe proper medication to deworm.
