The European Convention on Human Rights, commonly referred to as ECHR, was adopted on 4 November, 1950 at Rome. The ECHR also has another more official name – The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. As the name suggests, this convention is designed to provide protection to individuals from abuses by a state or a state body. As per the convention, any individual who has had his or her rights violated by a member state or any part of the machinery of a member state is entitled to present his case before a court.

This is the sole international convention that lays such great emphasis, especially at the international level, on the individual's rights. The ECHR is binding for all members of the Council of Europe. Any new entrant into the Council has to endorse the ECHR. The ECHR has a number of protocols that deal with the different issues under which an individual can approach a court against a member state. There are 14 protocols in all, some of which deal with the individual's rights and enforce certain norms that the convention lays down, and some others that allow changes within the convention itself.
