What Does The "65" Mean In Chicken 65?

Chicken 65 is prepared by marinating chicken pieces in a mixture of spices and curd/yoghurt, then deep-fried. One Indian friend tells me that there should be 65 different spices in this dish, but that seems highly exaggerated. What is the origin of the name "Chicken 65"?

This dish only has about 12 ingredients, and there are many different versions of why it is this title, but the one that I found was that it is supposed to take 65 days to make this dish. Hope this helps.

Here's what I found:  no one really knows the origin of the name. It is believed that some one tried to cook a whole chicken in a pot with 65 dried red chili peppers to make it hot, and then adjusted the spices by adding lime juice to make it more palatable.

OR.....I think its due to the fiery nature {of the dish} that lasts for 65mins after eating it, must be the reason for its name !!!!!!!!! Lol !

Because I am a hyderabadi, our place is well know for biryani and chicken I can 100 % say that's a real spicy dish which is given Chicken 65, which doesn't have any significance on the number "65"

Thanks for the most authentic answer yet. I think the origin in 1965 is plausible, 65 spices is impossible, and 65 days marinade is gross. Still curious, though. BTW is biryani a south India thing? We had prawns biryani and chicken lollipops for dinner, yum.

65 spices is a lot. Maybe its 65 pieces of chicken. Perhaps the originator cooked it for 65 people. Either way I'm sure its a good dish . Indian food rocks.

There are many folklore stories about Chicken 65. The origin of Chicken 65 dates back to early 60's. One concept says that the number 65 represents the number of days that the spices in the dish need to be soaked. Another theory is that the recipe has the number 65 in it because the Indian soldiers needed to have something quick to cook during a war in 1965.

            Now we're getting somewhere!

Marinating for 65 days is not plausible, as refrigeration is not guaranteed in a typical Indian household. This dish is not exotic like thousand-year eggs, or whatever that cvhinese dish is called.

65 spices is also not plausible. Though Indian food is spicy, most dishes have less than 10 spices.

65 chili peppers doesn't make sense because the curd/yoghurt cools down the spices a bit. This dish is a nice balance between hot and cool energies.

Origin during the Indo-Pakistan conflict, 1965, would make sense.

According to Wikipedia, nobody knows but it either refers to 65 days to marinate, or to 1965 when it was invented as a simple meal solution for Indian saoldiers. An alternate set of stories say it was from the Hotel Buhari in Chennai (still famous to this day), or it was that it was a dish targeted at macho diners, with 65 chilles.

I saw a lot of it in Hyderabad.....particularly the dish known as Chicken 65, which reputedly started in that city. A restaurant there had its dishes numbered on its take-out menu, and the chicken dish numbered “65” became so popular that it gained the name “Chicken 65;” today, menus all over Hyderabad, and India, are offering “Chicken 65!”.

To my knowledge the name came from the age of the chicken. A broiler (Table checken) of 65 days of age is very tender and right size and weight to cook. Older chicken are not so tender and that tasty and juicy. Thereofe this dish is made of very tender chicken of 65 days age. Hence the name 'Chicken-65'. Jawad
