It varies... But is usually no more than half the speed of light... Because lightning isn't light... It produces light, but is, in fact, the transfer of electrical energy through the atmosphere, which has some resistance properties.

The same speed as light itself, 186,000 miles per second.

        Quoting "186,000 mile/sec" is wrong.

That is the speed of Light. Furthermore, it is the speed of Light in a vacuum; neither of which apply here.

        Lightning is not Light.

Lightning is an expression of electro-static discharge/plasma that produces light.

Nor is Lightning generated in a vacuum - it is generated in a comparatively incredibly sticky place that is called our Atmosphere.

The question is further complicated by the fact that Lightning [unlike Light] does not travel in a straight line. The velocity of Lightning and the path it takes is also, generally, much more affected by conditions in our Atmosphere than Light is.

Lightning in fact travels a great deal slower than Light and at no-where near half Light-speed.

Depending on the various conditions, the speed of Lightning could be as [relatively] slow as 3,000 miles/sec. And scientists seem to agree on a 60,000 mile/sec maximum speed.
