What Does Dixie Mean?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Dixie is a place in United States. Actually it is a nickname for a southern state in US named Utah. People have settled down here since the early1860's. They were farmers sent by Brigham Young for the purpose of growing cotton due to lack of it during the American Civil War. The origin of this nickname is not known and remains obscure.

Yet there is a theory stating that the name was derived from a big time farmer and a slave owner named Mr. Dixy. He was very kind and considerate towards his slaves and hence it came to be known as Dixie's land and the name stayed after the area became famous for material comforts. The main city in this area has a population of 15,000 residents and it is named as St George. It is well known as a retirement and recreational have as it has a very pleasant climate, many golf courses and a vivid landscape.
